stansted Airport

transformation programme

Location: London, UK

Pascall+Watson have played a key role in the evolution of Stansted Airport for over 25 years.

Since its inauguration in 1991, Pascall+Watson have been a lead participant in Stansted Airports’ progressive development and evolution. We have completed numerous projects of varying size and complexity ranging from small scale reconfigurations to huge terminal expansion programmes; from strategic masterplanning studies to on-site delivery.

Projects:

· Pascall+Watson leads Stansted Airport's £600m Transformation Programme, its largest investment to date since its inception.

· Terminal Arrivals Extension – The building's design prioritises total accessibility, fostering inclusivity for all, including those with impairments.

· Satellite 1 Fit Out – As part of Stansted Airport's Transformation Programme, Pascall+Watson revitalises Satellite 1 with new interior designs and modernizes its infrastructure for successful delivery.

· Campus Development – Our terminal extension project doubled capacity with an innovative Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) strategy, reducing costs, accelerating the timeline, and enhancing safety.

Transformation Programme

The London Stansted Transformation Programme is an ambitious set of works to increase the capacity of passenger processing facilities to support future growth up to 43 mppa.

The 35000 m2 Terminal Building expansion programme consists of the replacement of the existing Train Transit System by a direct walkway connection, the reconfiguration of the existing terminal, expanded security, check-in and Departures Lounge, as well as the construction of new ancillary facilities.

“Pascall+Waton’s design ensures for a holistic vision of the passenger journey, providing a consistent and enhanced experience for passengers. The design successfully overcomes existing constraints and achieves a seamless integration with the original iconic building.”

Sustainability

Stansted Airport was designed to enable passengers to feel constantly connected with their surroundings and give a sense of orientation throughout the natural light-flooded processing stages. Throughout our involvement with the airport’s evolution from its humble 11.8 million passengers in 2000 to an impressive 28.1 million in 2019, we have played a key role in increasing the airport’s key infrastructure. Namely, extending the main terminal twice and building the third satellite. We have been instrumental in sustaining the original environmentally connected principles whilst implementing efficient material usage and modern methods of construction, both lowering the associated embodied carbon. Additionally, the many refit projects we’ve completed across the Stansted campus echo the embodied carbon savings from not building new and instead refitting the existing buildings prolonging their service life.
