global presence, local identity

Location: Tamil Nadu, India

Pascall+Watson's design for Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) International Airport in India is a bold architectural statement for Tamil Nadu. The integrated passenger terminal includes a vibrant forecourt, arrivals concourse, check-in, departures lounge, and landscaped areas, catering to over 6 million passengers annually. Drawing from local heritage and contemporary materials, the terminal embodies Trichy's identity. Inspired by South-Indian temple architecture and Kolam art, the roof's striking form and multi-layered facade capture the city's essence. Working closely with design advisors from the University of Madras to ensure cultural sensitivity and authenticity, Pascall+Watson's creation seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, offering a welcoming gateway to Trichy

The Design

Our airport design caters to the bustling atmosphere of passengers greeting and bidding farewell to loved ones. Featuring ample natural light, spacious seating, and lush gardens, our user-centred approach ensures comfort amidst the busy forecourt. Streamlined passenger facilities and intuitive wayfinding enhance navigation. Interior systems prioritise cleanliness and maintenance, while considering local customs and security protocols. A modular construction strategy allows for seamless operation during terminal expansion. Improved access roads facilitate connectivity to meet increasing passenger demands.

Sustainability

Our design prioritises sustainability, aiming for a high LEED & GRIHA 4-star rating. Natural light is maximised, and renewable energy solutions such as photovoltaic panels, solar tubes, and ground source heat pumps are incorporated. Roof-mounted photovoltaic panels harness sunlight for energy, while ground source heat pumps regulate air and cooling, powered by electricity generated on-site. Rainwater harvesting from roof gutters and permeable landscaping feeds subterranean tanks, providing water for various uses. This approach reflects our commitment to sustainable practices, ensuring environmental responsibility while meeting client objectives.
