Pascall+Watson Chosen as Partner for Transformative Projects Across Ramsgate
Pascall+Watson, a leading architecture practice, along with Curl La Tourelle and Jan Kattein have been selected by Thanet District Council to collaborate on five significant development projects in Ramsgate's Port and Harbour area, as well as the Newington Community Centre project. These initiatives are backed by £19.8 million in Levelling Up funds awarded to the town by the central government in 2021.
At Ramsgate Royal Harbour's East Crosswall, Pascall+Watson's design team is currently developing a state-of-the-art fishing facility to rejuvenate the local fishing industry. The plan focuses on constructing quayside fishing amenities for freezing and processing, and the potential for a harbour fish market providing direct access to freshly caught fish for Ramsgate residents. This initiative aims to generate new employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth within the community.
In addition to the fishing facility, Pascall+Watson is working on renovating the existing port infrastructure by designing facilities including two roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) berths targeted at finding operators for ferry/cargo transport services. Utilising expert recommendations from Infrata consultancy reports, Ramsgate will pursue developing cross-channel ferry freight services due to increasing cargo demand and limited expansion options at competing ports.
Satinder Bancil, a director for Pascall+Watson, confirmed that the Levelling Up funds are available over a set timescale. "We're currently in the early design stage for the fishing facilities; once we finalise layout plans and requirements based on affordability factors, we'll progress with obtaining planning permission and then the schemes through to construction. The funding must be utilised by 2025."
Pascall+Watson has also been coordinating efforts with the Thanet Fishermen's Association over the past five to six months, focusing on facility designs and optimal locations. The architecture practice will also liaise with numerous stakeholders, such as the UK Border Force for the port infrastructure project. Ultimately, these developments will seamlessly blend community, heritage, and cultural elements with core aspects such as the Maritime Museum.
